Tuesday, September 19, 2006

After 3 nights in EconoLodge, it was time to leave for vegas, baby! Breakfast consisted of yday's donuts and jack-in-the-box coffee and curly fries.

Staples Center

DSC01690
pb wanted to visit staples center.. so we dropped by.. i don't even know who this is? I stayed in the car though, cos we were illegally parked at a 'no stopping' area.. and i wasn't that interested in the compound..

i did notice that the sign 'STAPLES Center' at the bottom has the same font as the Staples stationery shop! yuan lai they are sponsored by them..

Route 66

Actually I'm not even sure which part was route 66, but i'm pretty sure we drove on it somewhere along the way. Anyway i'm gonna (in)correctly place pictures of the drive there under this heading. hoho.

The drive was pretty exciting cos it was through the desert? lots of beautiful hills and valleys and cacti.

Vegas!

After what, 5 hours of driving, we finally reached our hotel El Cortez. It was slightly downtown, not on the strip itself but it was only a very very short drive down to the strip. Upon entering the door of El Cortez, we were immediately greeted by the casino! cannot find lobby, but can find loads of slot machines! We later found out that all the hotels are like that.. walk in only the whole first floor is casino! See the casinos before you see the restaurants, shops, etc. Until now I still dunno where is the giftshop/restaurants of my own hotel.

After checkin in, we drove out to the strip! We were kind worried about the parking in the middle, I knew that they were mostly free/need validation, but I refuse to go through the trouble of validating [dun really know how either] and so we parked right at the edge of the strip at a trusted Travelodge motel, only for their customers but watever! heh heh.

That started our looong walk down Las Vegas Boulevard, from travelodge to circus circus, to stardust, and then Treasure Island. Vegas in the day didn't look as exciting as I expected, just some normal hotels and stuff, but we hoped that it would be a lot nicer in the night.

We stopped by a shopping complex, Fashion Show, attracted by the huge 2 storey Zara [pb is a fan of zara shirts] but the prices weren't too friendly [european brand what you expect]. He found a couple of polo tees and a casual, very american shirt from a&f.. The polo tees are called 'destroyed' and they remind me of a black puma polo tee my brother has that went through a mishap in the washing machine and is half faded-and-reddish. Maybe he can start wearing that out again! Some have splashes of paint on them even. And they are not cheap.. lucky pb's brother.

Spotting hollister, i zoomed over to check out a jacket that i've been eyeing, [all bubbles fault for showing me the hollister website]. there's no hollister near where i stay so i had to get it here.. hehe. but i didn't get it cos i didn't wanna lug it around and the car was parked very far away.

Treasure Island

after lots of walking we reached one of the nicer hotels, Treasure Island. We stumbled into the casinos and saw a restaurant serving buffet, so we went in. What I enjoyed most, was a chinese mushroom soup beehoon [so ironic hor come to restaurant to eat beehoon soup]. I also noticed that most of the americans ate a lot of the chinese food like chow mein and egg roll [popiah] and fried rice kinda nonsense.. haha siow.

Oh. and the dessert counter was just Crazy! they had a nice dispenser which made all sorts of hot drinks [i chose mocha], and a whole array of tarts, chocolate covered strawberries/marshmallows/bananas, candy floss, candies, and other desserts that i dunno the name for! got dejavu, remember the baseball game dessert cart? Americans sure take their desserts seriously.

pb is weird. he likes to take photos with the signs more than the place itself! so despite me telling him that it is obvious we are in vegas with the many neon signs in teh background, i present you with... pb at las vegas blvd.

After walking around aimlessly [hardly at the beginning of the strip] we decided that we were way too tired and started trekking back to get our car.

DSC01751
oh, in fact these signs are animated.. pretty cool.
