aloha from hawaii - day 3 on oahu island

My roommate has flown back to china for cny, and i feel like those typical bachelors with lots of peanut shells and empty beer cans on their coffee table. I just came back from work, went to Giant Eagle [supermkt] to buy junk food and groceries. I can't bring myself to start cooking but I felt hungry so I ate a cheese sausage, and some honey mustard pringles. Then I opened my newly acquired Baileys Haagen Dazs ice cream and it's fast depleting. Meanwhile, lots of unwashed dishes lie in the sink. Am I gross or what?

heehee. but the ice cream is good stuff.

Oh I forgot to mention, the night before, we took a bus down to the airport to rent a car for today. Although Oahu is supposed to have good public transport, but we wanted to save time.. and we are just spoiled lah. Heh heh.

After the magic of polynesia show, we sat at the bus stop and waited for the longest time for the bus to come. Meanwhile there were many shady characters at the bus stop. They were just sitting around smoking, one of them digged in some garbage for food to eat. One of them who looked like a guy to me, started powdering his nose.. Really weird lah. Well, the honolulu police were pretty hardworking. Apparently you aren't allowed to drink anywhere you like. And as I was feeling freaked out, the police actually stopped by the bus stop! I quickly gave the police a freaked out look and they came out to check those shady pple.. Well they were just checking for beer cans or something I guess. The police cldn't find anything wrong with them so they left after a while.. Scary. A couple of them walked off briskly when the police appeared, and came back when the police drove off.. I don't like.

We set off early in the morning.. towards the Haleiwa harbour. Settled for some breakfast at a little cafe in the town of Haleiwa. Damn cute got chicken one. Had a muffin, and crappy coffee. Hawaii, the Aloha State. I lurve the car license plate, it has a rainbow on it! How much happier can you get?

After the breakfast, we went to the Haleiwa harbour to start our Shark Encounter!! We were supposed to go out into shark infested waters and snorkel. Heh. No lah. There's this cage thing and they lower you in so that you can see the sharks swimming around you.

Funnily, there was no one at all at the harbour. Really weird. After a phone call, we realised that.. it had been cancelled due to bad weather. =( Waste our time, drive all the way there! That's something about the hawaiians that we can't stand. They are so laid back that they are really inefficient.. Happened to us a few times but you just gotta tell yourself, it's Hawaii and you're here to enjoy and slack away.

Well, it was a good thing we had a car [and gps! woot] cos it meant we had the freedom to go anywhere we wanted. We quickly decided on Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial.

"The USS Arizona Memorial, located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors killed on the USS Arizona during the Attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 by Japanese imperial forces and also the events of this day. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the action that forced United States involvement in World War II." (Source)

Yea, I felt pretty underdressed in my cheapo bedroom shorts and singlet. Like very disrespectful.. but hey, it was a totally last minute thing.. I was supposed to be diving with sharks ok!

Some memorabilia.. Art and craft done by the sailors, letters written and even their uniform. It is very heart wrenching to read and see these.

The visit was indeed enriching, I thought it would be downright boring but I did learn a little bit of history. I hated history lessons ever since Michael Foster taught us in Sec 1, and I beared with it til Sec 2 when I happily didn't choose it after streaming. I guess pb was pretty interested as well since he's with the navy and all.

We wanted to go kayaking at Kailua after that, but the skies were so cloudy and all. Stupid unpredictable hawaiian weather. We ended up driving up the east coast of oahu again.. It was such a slow drive cos despite it being called the Kamehameha Highway, it was really just a small road.

Guess where we were heading towards?

yes. cloudy.

Romy's Shrimp!! Garlic Shrimp.. and sweet and sour as well.

I haven't tasted fresh shrimp in a long while! Actually it's pretty much like mummy's cooking.. but the stupid deprived ang mohs don't get cheap fresh shrimp (prawn), neither do they know how to stir fry I guess. So this is like, some delicacy to them. It was also heavenly to poor prawn-deprived me.

this is called 'pineapple in ling mui hing powder', and pb bought it thinking it was some exotic thing.. er, turned out it's just sour plum powder! haha!!

Loved the good food. Too bad it was in the area of the Mormons who don't take caffeine nor alcohol so we couldn't wash it down with a nice cool beer. After the food, we didn't have much time left so we made our way along the north coast to see the killer waves again, before heading for the airport.
